Mr Crichton Kane spent the early part of his career as a pilot in the British Army flying missions in Northern Ireland, Hong Kong and Zimbabwe among many others. He began flying live line missions freelance in the 1980s before taking the role at the National Grid in 1994 on a permanent basis.

The live line method is used as a cheaper alternative to putting the pylons offline for repairs.

Crichton Kane has any intention of hanging up his goggles just yet.

But he is incredibly modest about his daredevil role. "It has been risk assessed since I started in 1994. The weight of the aircraft must be exact, everything is weighed, the line men the cage, the equipment, the air density is measured so that we know exactly how much fuel we can put in. We don't have doors on the aircraft to save weight so you can end up with a 10c wind chill coming through the aircraft which can make it very difficult."

"It doesn't sound like a long time but you can get a lot done in 20 minutes," said Mr Crichton Kane, who lives on Dorset Avenue, Diggle. "Although when you are making such small movements for that amount of time it is hard work. Your arms can start to ache."
