Technical Stuff: There are a lot of great rides to be had in South Mountain Regional Park, but the best is National trail. Very technical and demanding with lots of rocks and ledges to contend with. South Mountain Regional Park: 10919 Nike Air Max 90 Ultra Essential Enamel Green
The Sprawl: There's Phoenix, the city, and then there's Phoenix, the metropolis. Similar to Los Angeles, what many people refer to as "Phoenix" is actually made up of several cities Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale and Mesa. Driving from one side to the other on surface streets will take more than an hour.
The Cactus: There's lots of cactus in the Phoenix area, from the huge saguaro to a bike rider's mortal enemy, the little cholla. Unless Nike Air Max 90 Womens Size 7

Note: when I say bike path I mean where you can ride at >15mph without having to dodge dog walkers or strollers. These are good paths to ride in groups on.

Winter Weather: November through March, daytime temperatures in Phoenix average 65 to 75 degrees perfect for "winter" pedaling. Don't worry too much about rain gear Phoenix only averages about eight inches of rain a year.
The Cactus Cup: The Parks and Rec department put in three trails specifically for the Cactus Cup mountain bike race in McDowell Mountain Park. The Sport Loop is four miles long and is biased towards the less experienced rider. The Long Loop winds for 14 miles and covers a variety of terrain. The Technical Loop is 2.6 miles of challenging terrain. Another great ride worth checking out is the 16 mile Pemberton trail. McDowell Mountain Park: 15612 E. Palisades Blvd, Fountain Hills; 480/471 0173
Summer Weather: Unless you're a reptile, it's best to avoid Phoenix in the summer months. The average daily temperature is above 100 degrees during the months of June, July and August.
Smoother And Faster: Generally smoother and flatter than South Mountain, Papago Park's trails are great for less advanced riders, but swoopy and speedy enough to put a grin on the most advanced rider's face. Papago Park: 625 N. Galvin Pkwy; 602/256 3220
I don't know if you can get it online but at all the bike shops there is a free map of the Phoenix metropolitan area bike ways from the Maricopa Association of Governemnts it is very helpful for planning out your rides depending on how far you want to go.
Riding: Despite the size of the city (see "The Sprawl," below), there's lots of quality riding in the area. That's largely because only about 15 percent of Arizona is privately owned land. The rest is parks, forest, wilderness, recreation areas, wildlife preserves and Native American land. If Phoenix doesn't provide enough to satiate your riding cravings, consider driving to Prescott (1.5 hours), Sedona (2 hours) or Flagstaff (2.5 hours), all of which boast fine riding.
you're used to avoiding cacti, it's a good idea to add Slime to your tires. Use a comb, not your fingers, to pull cholla cactus out of your skin. If it's really bad, use needle nose pliers.
Cycling in Phoenix
Having to travel around to different cities for work I often take my Bike Friday so I can get a ride in when works done. This week I spent in Phoenix and was happily pleased at how accessible it was to road riding. There are bike paths everywhere and the other riders, which can be found on almost every block, are nice and give suggestions where to ride. I found a shop not on this list called "bike cafe" where the owner was super helpful and in addition invited me on a group ride the next day. The road surfaces are smooth and elevation is pretty flat around the metro area. Add to this the temperature and I rate it as my favorite city to ride in the USA.
