You made all of the right moves, but when you made the final breakaway you were still in good company with guys like Joaquim Rodriguez and two time winner Alejandro Valverde. Did you really think you could win?
think you have to choose any more. I just love both types of racing for different reasons.
Bicycling: Daniel, congratulations on a great win at Liege Bastogne Liege. You your whole team brilliantly.
Afterward in the press room, [team manager] Jonathan Vaughters said that we are a team that doesn win often. But when we win, we win big. And this is another big step!
I knew after winning the Tour of Catalonia that I was in the form of my life. And instead of riding Tour of the Basque Country, I just trained so damned hard than ever before I did some really specific work for the Ardennes. And it paid off. On Sunday I had this whole relaxed zen about me. I don know why, maybe the stars were aligned. But I was calm all day and everything went right. The guys were even laughing at me because I was cracking jokes all day.
And the way the team rode was amazing. I rarely seen the Garmin Sharp team ride this well. Ryder Hesjedal and I were kept out of the wind all day. Ryder came to me after about four hours of racing and said, never felt this fresh so far into this race! But the team just rode so well. On every climb they kept us at the front.

No, not at all. We actually see each other much more now that we are professionals. I was living in England and he was living in Ireland and France. We went quite a few years without seeing each other. But every race we are at together now, we talk, and I stayed at his house in the past few years just to hang out.
We get on really well and train together quite a bit. We got complementary styles, you can say. Neither of us are the prettiest riders to watch, but it effective. It all comes down to believing in each other. He obviously has a lot of belief in me right now, and fortunately I been able to pay him back each time by winning the race.
After winning a big stage race like the Tour of Catalonia, as well as one of cycling Monuments, I can help but wonder: Is Daniel Martin more of a stage racer or more of a Classics rider?
So after Liege you will now rest before building up for the Tour de France. What kind of ambitions will you have going into it this year?
I don really know yet. I haven thought about it, to be honest. Obviously I talk to the team about ambitions. It definitely a course that suits me. But I can really go in there asking full team support. You have to respect the race. Last year I went in to learn and I had a pretty rough time. But these are exciting times. If you can win Liege you can definitely do something in the Tour. This winter I felt stronger than ever on the bike and that has translated into results this year. Hopefully that can continue into the Tour. Hopefully Ryder will come out of the Giro really well and I will be able to pay him back a bit.
Daniel Martin: It funny, sometimes it just kicks like that. It also funny after the way the Amstel Gold Race went for me. Everything went wrong for me there. It was just a disaster of a day. And the one thing that didn go wrong for me there flat tire had in Fleche Wallonne on Wednesday. But a week later everything went right.
I thinking more and more that you can do both. Joaquim [Rodriguez] is good all year long. Vincenzo Nibali can do one day races and Grand Tours. I don Air Max 90 Ultra Green

Your cousin is pro racer Nicolas Roche, son of Tour de France champion Stephen Roche. Did you guys ride together much growing up?
That what happened in the Tour of Catalonia, when we were both having fantastic days. And when that happens, together, we are pretty hard to beat. And what we achieved at Liege was just unbelievable.
on the road one day because there Nike Air Max 90 Ultra Moire Black/Black is always tomorrow. Right now I am probably a little better at one day races. I the type of rider that leaves a lot on the road. But I think with maturity I can do something in the Grand Tours as well.
You and Ryder really seem to have something when you race together.
The final tactics were perfect too. We launched Ryder from farther out because I have the explosiveness to go on the Saint Nicolas climb in the final kilometers. I was just like a dream in the end. A race like Liege is so long and so hard. There are many things that can go wrong.
The glamour of the one day races is just amazing. I love the fact that you get on the bike feeling 100 percent in the morning and then you have absolutely nothing left by the end. It a winner take all mentality. You got to risk it. You have to take chances, but there are no second chances. There is no tomorrow. Stage racing, in contrast, Air Max 90 Ultra Essential
I knew I was feeling really good, but obviously I had no idea how the other guys were feeling. That why I hesitated at first when Rodriguez attacked. I tried to make Valverde chase. But when he still didn move and I saw Rodriguez riding off into the distance, I thought, maybe he just doesn have it in him. And that when I went. I didn look back. I was just so focused on Rodriguez. And once I got to him, I knew Rodriguez would psychologically be weak since he had just given his all and been caught. I know that from experience. Then I had a moment to compose before going for the finish. But I am quite proud of how instinctively and tactically I rode. until I was 18. I was British until I was 18 because it was just much easier with schooling and to do the national race series and national championships.
