Brochard was never alone in his state of grace. Through the years, various riders took a turn with the neckwarmer Vladimir Ekimov, Pavel Tonkov, little Damiano Cunego, even fellow world champ Roman Vainstains, making for an unprecedented two hair tails simultaneously flying high over the rainbow stripes but none possessed Brochard's staying power, nor his bedrock belief in the old ways no matter how many podium girls the metrosexuals married, nor Nike Air Max 90 Ultra Breeze Black
Like any passionate bike racing fan or anyone anywhere who still believes in dreams, ambition, happy endings of the storybook rather than masseuse induced variety, and the capacity of sport to heal the wounds we inflict upon ourselves through the curse of what my college humanities professor (who later smothered, stabbed and eventually killed his wife in a hotel room) liked to call "man's inhumanity to man"
the unthinkable yet somehow inevitable conclusion none of us wanted to admit awaited us I find myself stunned, shocked, angry, weepy, nostalgic for a simpler time yet stripped clean of all my former faith that we can ever find our way back there.
The Guardian, July 2, 2007, pro racing preview: " 'La Broch' has the only mullet in professional cycling, though it's greying now. He is also still winning at 39."

of the Tour of Luxembourg.
In his 15 year career, Brochard embodied the glory and ignominy of modern pro cycling: He was a world champion and a Tour de France stage winner (both in 1997), was embroiled in the Festina drug scandal in 1998 and kicked out of the sport, then rose from rock bottom with several prestigious wins late in his life (stages in Paris Nice, the GP Midi Libre, as well as the Criterium International overall at age 35). But the man was really known Nike Air Max 90 Id Ideas and loved for his mullet.

Astana? Contador? Tour de France? Whatever.
As a native Hoosier with a now lapsed mullet by birthright that once spanned three states and parts of two decades, I guess I believed in what I knew was impossible that some way Brochard would always be there, flying it, living it, his hair a symbol of the sport itself. (According to my limited experience racing at the sharp end I won a coupon for a cheeseburger once a pack is a mullet: business up front, party in the rear.)

The BBC, June 15, 2001, Tour de France preview: "[Brochard's] mullet hairstyle wins few fashion awards. . . . . several riders, including the 'King Mullet' Laurent Brochard tried to elbow in on McGee's wheel. . 26, 2005, Omloop Het Volk: ". . . Brochard has his mullet to keep him warm."

You'll notice there's no citation at all for 2006. That's because Brochard cut off his mullet for the season and went winless for the first time in his career. All mulletted up again for '07, the magic returned and our man won the mountains jersey in the Tour de Romandie, the points jersey in the Tour Down Under and a stage Nike Air Max 90 Phantom White
