Here's a suggestion: Complete two centuries before June 1st. It's early enough that you have time to get started, but late enough that you don't have time for excuses. Better yet, find some friends and do the same route twice: see if you can cut at least 10 percent off your time on the second try.

Now is an ideal time for you to do the same. Identify specific attainable goals for 2012 now. For example, don't say, "I'm going to get faster." Instead, say, "I'm going to improve my time in our club's time trial championship by two minutes." Centuries, sportives, and charity rides are also great opportunities to set cycling goals for yourself and then build a season around meeting them.
Not everyone is racing, though. Several teams are still wrapping up their final preseason training camps, banking miles in warmer climates, and slowly preparing for goals later in the year.
