I think safety on the job should be her top priority. The job is not about her having fun and listening to music, it about getting the children across the street and safely. Yes, she has been lucky so far and accident free. It only takes one distraction to cause an accident for the drivers. I was watching the dancing Is any child life worth putting them at risk so she can show off on the job? Really people think about this! A job is not always about it the way you want if you are putting people in harms way. Who wants their child safety to be compromised? Let that parent come forward now.
100% visible? She waves it around sometimes which actually gets it more attention. She wears a neon vest. She blows her whistle before crossing. She has music playing. She dancing around. AND she waits for a green light before crossing. If a driver cant see her they shouldn be driving at all. If there have been any injuries around that intersection they must have occurred while she was off duty and were most likely due to the obstacle course left behind by CITY construction workers who are repairing the road (which, by the way was supposed to Air Max 90 Black
This is just ridiculous. Kathleen mans the intersection at Dufferin and Gordon which has streetlights, it not a crosswalk. Whatever fatalities occur must have happened on other streets because there have been none that I know of in that area. I live on Gordon St. and I see her daily. "I'm dedicated to my job and I'd like to be able to do it the way I want."
Pat, I don know what makes you think that the safety is not her priority. She is doing a job and make it more fun fore the kids. Kids arrive to the School happy and end up having a good day. Anyone going to work or school unhappy and miserable have a very unproductive day. I can not see how anyone can say it is putting anyone at risk without having any evidence of that happening. What makes you think that it is luck for 10 years that nothing happened, not even a close call. I wish everyone would end up going to work and school in a happy mood.
are really upset and a lot of kids at our school immediately started (planning) protests and petitions because we really want her to be able to dance, one student told CityNews.
understand she dancing, said Const. Clint Stibbe. applaud her for dancing. Unfortunately we have to look at the risks that pedestrians are facing when she is doing this. We are seeing that the stop sign is not facing traffic at all times. say if the dancing stops, their days will be a bit duller.

be done by November). She is great at what she does while also injecting some cheer into everyone who has the pleasure of seeing her. Let her be. We lucky to have her.
I applaud her enthusiasm in her role as a crossing guard. That very hard to come by in this day and age especially from a 64 year old. But when a police constable is making that request you better abide by it because risk management truly outweighs having fun, especially when the risk factor here can lead to potential fatalities. Having said that, I think we should let her do what she wants. If her dancing inevitably churns out a traffic accident that results in injuries or god forbid the death of a child due to her visual distraction, then we let her live with that and see how well she sleeps at night.
Look up the WSIB stats for deaths per month on the job, they are alarming!

She obliterates the daily doldrums with deft footwork and a mile wide smile. It a smile that reciprocated every morning by dozens of students and parents in Toronto west end, where the dancing crossing guard has been ushering children safely through the intersection of Gordon and Dufferin streets for the last two years.
Pat: Given her perfect record we can assume that Ms Byers has made the safety of the children a top priority. Furthermore, Ms Byers only permits crossing on a green light so it is logical to assume the only risk comes from distracted drivers who would be running the light. Having just researched crossing guard related injuries this is almost exclusively the case. I would assert that a dancing/moving crossing guard will will be more visible to a distracted driver than one standing stoically, therefore she is actually improving the safety of the children.
