That bike carried me away from my broken home, out of the dead end job, far away from the industrial park hellscape, and into a wonderful world filled with likeminded grownups who biked, swam, and ran. I married a bike person; surrounded myself with bike people, and basked in the glow of a much happier home and occupation writing about the cycling life.
I was wondering how many women tossed a leg over a bike somewhere along the path in mid life only to find themselves in some remarkable universe they'd never dared dream of. So I floated the question out on my FitChick Facebook page. The avalanche of responses that came pouring in were at once humbling and heartwarming. Here's a sample of some of the stories the women (and a couple of men) shared. Took a cycling skills course. Lost 60 lbs, met tons of great people, got a seat on my local bike/ped. committee, gained confidence. All great stuff. Now I take beginning women out on rides and helped create an inaugural race in Nike Air Max 90 Ultra Essential Black/Multi
Fit ChickPrevious postNext postJanuary 30, 2013Twenty years ago I was in a wreck of a relationship, working a soulless job in an industrial park surrounded by four lane highways. I belonged to a gym I never went to, ran half heartedly once or twice a week, and though I'd always ridden a bike growing up, I didn't own one in this current state of adulthood. I guess I figured that this is what adulthood looked like. I gained about 10 pounds, drank too much beer, and smoked socially. I was a pretty lost and unhappy soul.
Sue Murphy I'm 45 and started riding last march (over 2000 miles last year) . I've lost 60 lbs, have already done a century. Its the first exercise I've found that I like (actually I love it). I'm just happy all the time now
Vince Coons I am a guy, but cycling saved my life. in short I was 338 pounds 40 years old and a 3 pack a day smoker till I started riding a bike. Now I am 200 pounds with a little way to go, Haven't smoked in 7 years, Quit my job and opened a bike shop.
It didn't stop there. That faithful steed guided me to another, better bike, which showed the way to another, better bike and so on and so forth. This succession of two wheeled saviors eventually shepherded me to my team. Eventually I would wake up in South Africa and saddle up to compete in the biggest stage race in the world. All because of a bike.
Keeley Thatcher Just over a year ago I bought my first bicycle since I was 12. I am now 70 lbs lighter and love my bicycle!!
Susan B. Anthony famously said, "the bicycle has done more to emancipate women than anything else in the world." To that I say Amen. I've been thinking an awful lot about the transformative power of the bicycle lately, as I'm putting together a cycling feature for one of Bicycling's sister publications, Prevention magazine.
Cyclists Recount How Biking Changed Their Lives
Cati Scheifele I started riding at 24 . bought a yellow Cannondale Nike Air Max 90 Premium Warhawk
Kelly Knox Cycling has completely changed my life. After I was diagnosed with MS and had to stop most of the activities I liked (my popliteal nerves became paralyzed), my doctor suggested about five years ago that I try riding a bike (with my feet attached to the pedals). Now I'm a member of the national Paralyzed Veterans Racing Team, the VP of the local Cycle Club, a cycling advocate in my community, a regular bike commuter, and actually call myself an "athlete" for the first time since my diagnosis 13 years ago. My, what strange turns our lives can take sometimes! I turn 50 this year, and my goals are to ride 4000 miles, try racing, and work toward more bike friendly infrastructure in my township.
f300 . wanted to join the fit ladies at work for rides on the path. I was 50 lbs overweight and suffering from desk job itis. I got talked into doing the beginner mountain bike race at French Creek, 3 weeks after I bought my bike. I could only ride 25% of it but finished with a huge smile, loving the adventure and sense of accomplishment. I am now 32 years old, 50 lbs lighter and still racing mountain bikes, road and off road triathlon, and cyclocross. Cycling truly improved my quality of life, and I am so glad to be part of a community of like minded individuals!
still remember how giddy I felt rolling it out off of the showroom floor. It felt like hope on wheels. Hell, it was hope on wheels.
Diane Bauer I got my first bike at 48. I have lost 40+ pounds and did my first sprint Triathlon at 49. I am a mother of 7 children all whom I have home schooled. I just rode 57 miles today with a friend. March 15th will be my 1 year anniversary with my bike.
Then one day, I walked into a Bike Line out in the 'burbs and laid down the few hundred dollars I had on a bike a dark green sparkly Specialized hybrid. I didn't even know where to ride it. I Air Max 90 Ultra Olive didn't care. I can Air Max 90 Ultra Breathe All Black
