The five year restoration plan, designed by faculty member Sean Anderson, will allow students to monitor and evaluate the native plants and the response of the least Bell's vireo, which Rodriguez described as an insectivorous bird considered a bellwether for the health of Southern California riparian habitats.
give students hands on experience in native habitat restoration, Rodriguez said.
"We've only been out here an hour, and look at how much we've done already," she said as she scanned a creek bank that had been covered with willow and mulefat cuttings. "It's nice being out here, contributing to the school, and not being cooped up in a classroom all the time."
Monica Jacinto, 23, a graduate of CSUCI's environmental science resource management program, said part of her coursework involved designing a restoration plan for the creek area.

"The fact that they were out here planting, I wanted to come and be a part of it," said Jacinto, who started as a business major.
he said. "Where the new access road got built, there is a lot of opportunity for restoration."
With shovels, mauls and augurs in hand, dozens of CSU Channel Islands students occupied a barren campus creek bed on Saturday morning. But this was no protest; they came to work.
Jill Craig, 22, of Pismo Beach came to CSUCI intending to major in sociology but soon found environmental science was a better fit.
Nick Cooper, 19, dryly muttered, "Work is fun," as he jammed a posthole digger into the ground. He said he took an environmental science course as an elective but is likely to remain focused on a career in communications.
