Rissa is the second MSU student to be killed in a traffic crash since classes started at the university. Caty Delwiche, 18, was killed on Oct. 2, while training for a cross country meet with a friend, by a driver who crossed a lane of traffic on Monks Avenue and hit her on the sidewalk.
Four yellow circles were also painted on the road. Two circles had the word "purse" next to them and two circles had the word "shoe." All of the circles were several feet Air Max 90 Superfly T from the painted stick people.
"I do want to emphasize, even if alcohol was served there, we don't know if alcohol was a factor," Cooper said.
Huettl would not say whether police suspect alcohol was a factor for the driver or for the women.
"She's really a very, very strong person and too stubborn not to get better," Gleason said. "Rissa was her best friend and they both had good reputations on campus. They were involved in a lot of things, knew lots of people."
An entry on the Facebook Web site created by Amen Reif's friends provided details about the incident that weren't confirmed by investigators or Cooper. It said the women left the sorority formal late Saturday night and started walking in a direction they thought was toward downtown Mankato. They were actually walking in the opposite direction, the Web site entry said.
"It's pretty tough walking around campus right now," Gleason said. "It seems like everyone has red eyes.
The State Patrol isn't releasing specifics about the crash. Cooper said he was told one of the women had called for a ride and that person "came upon the scene shortly after the crash." That person was not the teen driving the car that hit the women, Cooper said.
"It's going to be really, really hard. There's a memorial tonight and Rissa's funeral is Wednesday. The worst part is Corinne isn't going to be able to go to her best friend's funeral."

After spending several minutes at the scene, the group left arm in arm without talking to reporters.
When Amen Reif realized they were lost, she called for a ride. She tripped and fell in the road when the ride arrived and Overstake was attempting to help her up when they were both hit, according to the Facebook entry.

The name of the teen who was driving the 1991 Toyota Tercel that hit the women has not been released by the Minnesota State Patrol. Mankato police officers, who are assisting with the investigation, reported the women were in the roadway when they were hit on Third Avenue, just north of Kingswood Drive.
In a news release after the crash, Mankato police reported one of the women was lying in the street and the other was attempting to help her up.
just not known to what degree," Huettl said after a news conference at MSU, where both women were students. "This was a tragedy that didn't have to happen."
Another student, 21 year old Amanda Jax, died Oct. 30 from alcohol poisoning after celebrating her birthday at a downtown Mankato bar.
Amen Reif, of Eden Prairie, was killed in the crash. Overstake, of Loretto, was taken to Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital with critical injuries. Overstake was in fair condition Monday. Both women were Minnesota State University students and members of the Gamma Phi Beta sorority.
How Rissa J. Amen Reif, 22, and Corinne L. Overstake, 21, got to the location on the north edge of the city where they were both hit by a 17 year old driver is a question law enforcement officers didn't have an answer for Monday. Alcohol has become a part of the investigation, however, said Jerry Huettl, Mankato Department of Public Safety director.
Both women were attending a "semi formal" sorority event at the Morson Ario VFW Post building at 1900 N. Riverfront Drive Saturday night, said Michael Cooper, MSU director of media relations. Gamma Phi Beta members had filled out the paperwork required at the university for off campus events, Cooper said.
Sgt. Jacalyn Sticha of the State Patrol said there was "no indication" the driver had been drinking. The teen agreed to an alcohol test and blood was taken from Amen Reif to determine if alcohol was in her system, Sticha said. She did not know if Overstake was tested for her blood alcohol level after the crash.
Zac Gleason sat in his dark apartment reading entries on the Facebook Web site and answering calls on his cell phone Monday morning. He estimated he had slept Air Max Ultra 90 Infrared
The paperwork requires university organizations to disclose if alcohol will be served, but Cooper said Monday he didn't know whether the documents showed that Gamma Phi Beta planned to serve alcohol at the event. Bar managers at Morson Ario said VFW leaders told them not to comment about the event.
morning. Gleason also grew up in Loretto and said he and Overstake broke up about three months ago after dating since high school.
There is no direct path from the Morson Ario VFW building to the site near Jones Metal Products, north of Highway 14, where the women were hit. There is a sidewalk that goes north from the bar and under the Highway 14 overpass before connecting to a bike path that heads west to Third Avenue. There also is a sidewalk on Third Avenue north of the highway that ends at Kingswood Drive. Monday.
