"I remember seeing emergency vehicles going to the crash site. And, papers floating in the air. The plane was carrying mail. There were letters and things floating through the air."A seemingly hopeless situation. But, these journalists had hope. "The first thing that helped me deal with it, emotionally, was seeing the first helicopter rise out of the smoke," Nixon said. "Because they don take dead people to the hospital. That was our first inkling that someone may have survived."That day, reporter Bruce Scheid interviewed some of the 184 survivors just a few hundred yards from the still smoldering wreckage. "You feel invading their privacy at a time when they would least want anyone to do that," Scheid said. "I go grateful for people who were willing to do that, and did it. It was very difficult for them."Many survivors also shared their stories with Al Joens. "It was real early on, like the next day, and I don know if that really registered with them. And, I wonder how they coped with that over the years," Joens said.Coping hasn come easily for the journalists covering the crash, either. "Certainly, it haunts me," Scheid said. "For days, months, those thoughts are going through your mind," Nixon said. "Odd things such as walking by a digital clock and the time says 2:32. Boom! I there again. I there," Boxum said.Since the crash, their careers have taken them on different paths. 18 months after the crash, Nixon left KTIV to teach broadcasting at Iowa Lakes Community College. Nixon now serves as president of a community college, in Michigan. Boxum left the business for jobs in public relations at the United Way and Gateway. He works in the Twin Cities, now. After 37 years at KTIV, Scheid retired in 2007. And, Joens still proudly anchors "NewsChannel Four Today", as he did the day Flight 232 crashed. Most Popular StoriesMost Popular StoriesMore>>SportsEast tops arch rival Heelan in football season openerEast tops arch rival Heelan in football season openerAustin Ahrendt scores a touchdown in East's 31 21 win over Bishop Heelan on Thursday. In one of Iowa's best rivalries, Bishop Heelan and East met for the 77th time on Thursday. cameras, and reporters, capturing the crash on video tape."When I walked into the newsroom, I had just finished one of the graduate courses I was taking at the University of South Dakota," said Dave Nixon, Sr., KTIV Anchor. A typical Wednesday afternoon for veteran anchor Dave Nixon. In another corner of the newsroom, reporter Dave Boxum was waiting for word that a suspected killer had been brought back to the state. "So, I was waiting for that development when over the newsroom scanners we heard traffic and chatter about this plane in distress," said Boxum. "We would get a number of these and they simply be a matter of an A 1 or an A 7 out at the airport would land safely," Nixon said. "The assignment editor said, let get out there. it may not be anything, Boxum said. "A few minutes later, the captain was asked how many people were on board. And, he said 292 souls on board. Immediately, the newsroom went into cardiac arrest. This is bigger than anything we could ever imagine," Nixon said.Nixon broke into regular programming to let folks know what was happening in the skies over Siouxland. "The minute we went on the air, it was more about the drama of what was going on the air on the airplane on the reports we were getting. I had to fight the emotions throughout that afternoon, throughout that entire ordeal. I would catch myself squeezing the anchor desk."At the airport, Boxum could see the crippled DC 10 coming. "I saw it when it came in," Boxum said. Things looked good. "I saw it for a brief second, and then it disappeared behind some hangars," Boxum said. The plane looked like it would land safely. "I didn know what was going on. I could hear sounds. But, I couldn see anything. And, then it came cartwheeling out down the runway," Boxum said."You go through that elation period where you say, danger is over, Nixon said. "And, then, when the plane was about to touch down, and just exploded, it reached in and took your breath away."Kept behind the airport fence, Boxum could only watch as crews raced to save hundreds of lives.
