My boss assigned me to help write a book about "alternative nutrition," a guide to the myriad (and sometimes mysterious) dietary beliefs that included everything from pretty pedestrian vegetarianism to far out there fruitarianism (seriously, they try to only eat fruit).

Fact is, despite our hubris, we still don't really know how broccoli battles chronic disease or how eating healthy fat can keep you lean. We have some sound theories, but few certainties. Fruits and vegetables and grains and meats have hundreds and thousands of chemicals that work together and within our bodies in complex, little understood ways that keep surprising even the most advanced scientists.
It started with the beta carotene study. If people who ate lots of carrots and brightly colored anti oxidant rich veggies had a lesser incidence of cancer, we should take megadoses of beta carotene (the primary antioxidant found in said veggies) in a pill to prevent cancer, right? Yeah, only when they tried that with smokers, the pill popping puffers got more cancer. So they stopped the study. More recently supplements are making headlines again, this time in separate studies that linked vitamin and mineral supplementation with a slightly higher risk for dying.
